Monthly maximum and minimum temperatures
The chart shows that Penallt monthly average maximum temperatures were in general cooler than those given for the Usk average with the annual mean maximum (13.9°C) being 0.9°C below Usk’s 14.8°C
Penallt was again warmer by night overall (6.9°C as opposed to 5.7°C), perhaps due to temperature inversion effects and/or more cloudy conditions.
- July 31st was the warmest day of the year with a maximum of 28.4°C
- January 17th had the lowest maximum temperature of 1.4°C
- Warmest by night was September 2nd with a minimum of 16.0°C
- Coldest by night was January 18th, with a minimum temperature of -4.2°C
- There were 55 days on which the temperature exceeded 20°C and 20 when it was below 0°C
- The mean annual temperature was 10.3°C.
The mean annual temperature for England and Wales (1845 to 2012) is 9.3°C. The 2024 figure for Penallt is thus 1.0°C above the England/Wales average. The mean maximum temperature was 13.9°C (Usk = 14.8°C). Night times were much warmer than usual (mean min = 6.9°C, 1.2°C above that for Ross).
The chart below shows that 2024 bucked the general trend for increasingly warm years in Penallt since records started in April 2011.
Rainfall
The chart shows the usual uneven distribution of rainfall throughout the year. Five months had in excess of 100 mm falling, with September’s 216.0 mm being the wettest. By contrast, June was an untypically dry month (33.0 mm) with half the expected rain.
Overall, the total rainfall for 2024 was 1476.2 mm (58.1 inches), 37% above the average Usk total of 1076.9 mm (42.4 inches) making the year the third wettest since Penallt records began in 2011.
