2015 details


January 2015 was a little warmer and much wetter than usual  and the average maximum temperature of 7.5°C was 0.2°C above the Ross average for January of 7.3°C. The minimum temperature sank below 0°C on eight days. The warmest day was the 9th (max = 13.4°C) and the coldest was the 19th with a low of -3.2°C.

The measured rainfall was 140.0 mm, was 73% above the Ross-on-Wye* average for January of 80.7 mm and rain was measured on 26 days in the month and, the wettest being the 14th when 32.8 mm fell.

February 2015 was a little cooler than normal and few rainy days too. The month started with a cold spell with frosty mornings and a few warmer days towards the end raised the average a little. Overall, the average maximum temperature of 6.9°C was 0.8°C below the Ross average for February of 7.7°C. There were eleven days when the air temperature dropped below zero..

There were twelve days on which no rain fell, and falls were under 10 mm on all but the wettest day, the 13th (21.2 mm), making a total rainfall of 59.8 mm, 13% above the Ross-on-Wye* average for February of 53.0 mm.

March 2015 was typical regarding temperature. Overall, the average maximum temperature of 10.0°C was 0.3°C below the Ross average for March of 10.3°C and there were no frosts recorded either.

There were 15 days on which rain fell but, the wettest day being the 13th when 14.8 mm fell. The total rainfall of 52.0 mm was very close to the Ross-on-Wye* average for March of 51.2 mm.

April 2015 was much warmer and drier than usual. Overall, the average maximum temperature of 15.6°C was 2.7°C above the Ross average for April of 12.9°C with a peak of 22.3°C  on the 15th. There was only one day of sub-zero temperature, this being only the third frosty day so far in 2015.

There were only 8 days on which significant rain fell and two periods of 7 consecutive days each days when no rain fell. It was a very dry month overall with the total rainfall of 19.6 mm being 40% of the Ross-on-Wye* average for April of 48.4 mm.

May 2015 saw 14 days on which no rain fell. But a very wet start saw 80.2 mm fall between the 2nd and the 6th and the total rainfall rose to 129.4 mm, 2.63 times the Ross-on-Wye* average for May of 49.2 mm. Maximum temperatures exceeded 20°C on four consecutive days (21st to 24th). May was cool overall however, and the average maximum temperature of 15.8°C was 0.8°C below the Ross average for May of 16.6°C.

June 2015 was fine and dry for the most part and a late burst of warm weather raised the average temperature to a little above usual for the month.

The Penallt total rainfall of 41.8 mm was 77% of the the Ross* June average of 54.0 mm with the first day contributing 17.4 mm of this total. There were 22 days in the month when no rain fell too.

Maximum temperatures were a little above average during this period, exceeding 20°C on fifteen days with a maximum of 27.8°C on the last day, a big contrast to the first day when the temperature never rose above 12.6°C . Overall, the average maximum temperature of 19.7°C was 0.4°C above the Ross* average for June of 19.3°C

July 2015: Despite beginning with a near record 30.6°C on its first day, July 2015 was cooler than average and wetter than average too. The total rainfall of 67.8 mm was nearly double the Ross-on-Wye* average for July of 34.8 mm, with about half falling on a three day period (24th to 26th). The average maximum temperature of 21.0 °C was 1.0 °C below the Ross average for July of 22.0 °C, and there were only three days when the temperature exceeded 25 °C.

August 2015: Just as for August 2014, August 2015 was colder and much wetter overall than average. The total rainfall of 143.6 mm was 2.35 times the Ross-on-Wye* average for August of 61.1 mm, and the average maximum temperature of 19.3 °C was 2.2 °C below the Ross average for August of 21.5 °C, the warmest days being the 8th and 22nd (24.5 °C).

Remarkably, there were as many as 13 rain-free days in the month; the wettest day was the 14th, with a rainfall of 32.4 mm.

September 2015 was cool and had average rainfall. There were 18 days without rain overall (defined as 0.2 mm or under). Three days accounted for the bulk of the rain, the 12th, 14th and 22nd, their 38 mm boosting the total rainfall to 62.6 mm, only 1.1 mm below the the Ross-on-Wye* average for September of 63.7 mm.

The month was cooler than average too, with the average maximum temperature of 17.5 °C being 0.8 °C below the Ross average for September of 18.3 °C.

October 2015 had normal temperatures overall  and was a little wetter than usual. The average maximum temperature of 14.1°C was 0.1°C below the Ross average for October of 14.2°C.

There were 19 days on which no rain was recorded, making it feel like a dry month, but the total rainfall of 93.0 mm, was 38% above the Ross-on-Wye* average for October of 67.5 mm, largely because rain fell on four days, the 5th, 21st, 29th and 30th.

November 2015 was much milder and wetter than usual. The average maximum temperature of 11.6°C was 1.3°C above the Ross average for November of 10.3°C. The temperature dipped below zero on the 23rd only.

Rain was recorded on all but two days in the month and on two further days, only 0.2 mm was measured. The total rainfall of 141.4 mm was 2.19 times the Ross-on-Wye* average for November of 64.5 mm.

December 2015 was far warmer and much wetter than usual, there being no days of frost (or snow) at all; the average maximum temperature of 11.5°C was 3.4°C above the Ross average for December of 8.1°C. The maximum temperature exceeded 10°C on 24 days.

There were only 2 days when no rain was recorded and a further one when precipitation was recorded as 0.2 mm; the total rainfall was 236 mm, three times the Ross-on-Wye* average for December of 78.1 mm.

Compared with UK data for December, the Penallt mean temperature was 9.5°C, beating the UK figure of 8.0°C by 1.5°C, the long-term UK average being 3.9°C. The rainfall equivalents were 236 mm for Penallt, the UK average was 211 mm and the long-term UK average is 120 mm.
