[Weather data recording started in Penallt in March 2011. The charts below show the monthly summaries from January 2025 until the end of December 2025 and also compare Penallt’s 2025 weather with the 1981-2010 overall average data for Usk, the nearest place (16 km by crow) for which reliable data exist.]
Monthly maximum and minimum temperatures
The chart shows that Penallt monthly average maximum temperatures were in general about the same as the Usk average (14.6°C) just 0.2°C below Usk’s 14.8°C. However, the Spring and Summer months were distinctly warmer then average, a clear contrast with the gloomier months.
Penallt was again warmer by night overall (6.8°C as opposed to 5.7°C), perhaps due to temperature inversion effects and/or more cloudy conditions.
- July 11th was the warmest day of the year with a maximum of 32.1°C
- January 4th had the lowest maximum temperature of 1.3°C
- Warmest by night was June 21st with a minimum of 17.3°C
- Coldest by night was January 10th, with a minimum temperature of -4.2°C
- There were 87 days on which the temperature exceeded 20°C and 40 when it was below 0°C
- The mean annual temperature was 10.7°C.
The mean annual temperature for England and Wales (1845 to 2012) is 9.3°C. The 2024 figure for Penallt is thus 1.4°C above the England/Wales average. The mean maximum temperature was 14.6°C (Usk = 14.8°C). Night times were much warmer than usual (mean min = 6.9°C, 1.2°C above that for Ross).
The chart below shows that 2025 confirms the general trend for increasingly warm years in Penallt since records started in April 2011.
Rainfall
The chart shows, perhaps, the new trend for dry summers and wet winters. Five months had in excess of 100 mm falling, with November’s 212.4 mm being the wettest. By contrast, March was a particularly dry month (8.0 mm) with under 10% of the expected rain. It was the second driest month since Penallt records began in 2011, the driest being May 2020 (6.2 mm).
Overall, the total rainfall for 2024 was 1147.6 mm (45.2 inches), 7% above the average Usk total of 1076.9 mm (42.4 inches).
