Babington Meadow in Penallt wins Green Flag Award for Parks in Wales
The Green Flag Award is all about connecting people with the very best parks and green spaces. This year, Penallt has succeeded in winning the award for Babington Meadow which lies at the heart of the hilltop village.
The Green Flag award is a prestigious commendation and the benchmark for parks and green spaces in the UK and beyond. Wherever you see a Green Flag, you know you’re visiting an exceptional place with the highest standards.
The scheme is run in Wales, with support from Welsh Government. We know having a good quality
environment can have a big impact on our communities, health and well-being, and economy.
The awards are judged by an army of green space experts who volunteer their time and knowledge.
Babington Meadow was originally the playing field for Penallt primary school until it closed in the mid-
1980s.
In 1999 under the supervision of Trelleck United Community Council (TUCC) a committee was formed to design and develop a community park based on the best ecological principles and accessible to the whole community.
Over a 2 year period the meadow was transformed into parkland using indigenous plant species with many villagers, young and old helping with construction and planting.
The Meadow also hosts a number of community events from outdoor theatre to Easter Egg hunts to an annual art festival – this year this brilliant festival runs from August 31st –September 3rd.
