As background to this, Ludo Graham writes:-
Humble by Nature has been running rural skills courses at Upper Meend Farm for over a year now, and we have also hosted a variety of pop-up dinner events catered by local cooks and food producers. It’s been great to see a number of people from Penallt village at the farm during that time. We have also attracted a wide range of visitors to the area who would not otherwise have come, and many of these people have stayed at local inns and B&Bs, eaten at local pubs and restaurants and have visited our lovely Wye Valley and its many attractions.
The Humble by Nature business is growing and steadily and we are now applying for a premises licence to sell alcohol, late night refreshments and to provide regulated entertainment. We’d like to give a bit of background information to explain why.
- Licence to sell alcohol on the premises
Up to now, people coming to the pop up dinners at the farm have been bringing their own bottles of wine or beer, and we would now like to be able to sell alcohol to guests at these supper events. - Provision of regulated entertainment
This licence allows us to play ambient recorded music (i.e. background music) at Humble by Nature events, within restricted hours. - The provision of late night refreshments
We are applying for a licence allowing us to occasionally sell hot food and refreshments after the standard closing time of 11.30 up to 1am, but only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and only to people who are already attending an event. When there are no events on those evenings, the farm will be closed. We will not be open to the general public, so we will only sell to people who have booked and pre-paid for dinners or other special events. - Licence to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises
We plan to open a small farm shop, at which we would sell locally produced food as well as locally made beers, ciders and possibly wines. We hope to open the shop sometime in 2014. Although the opening is still some way off, we have applied for an off-sales licence now to put everything in a single application.
Kate Humble and Ludo Graham and the small team have been working hard to keep the farm alive and achieve the goals we set back in 2011. We’re getting there slowly, and we hope and believe that Humble by Nature has been a positive addition to the area. We hope this information clarifies our plans for the immediate future.”
